GLUTATHIONE
GLUTATHIONE is a powerful antioxidant produced by the liver to protect the body against free radicals, peroxides, heavy metals, drugs, xenobiotics. It is often called “Master Antioxidant”. Glutathione is present in almost every cell in the body and it used for cell integrity, for detoxication processes, for energy production. Glutathione is highly concentrated in the eye lens and is essential to maintain its transparency and to remove xenobiotics. The lens of the human eyes is the organ that never sheds a cell. The lens of the eye is under constant stress of solar UV radiation. It receives nutrients via the aqueous fluid. In order to maintain lens transparency and clarity, the protective antioxidant levels in the aqueous fluid of the eye must be higher than in the blood plasma. (42,43, 44) However, glutathione levels decline in the lens with advancing age; and the decline is especially rapid prior to cataract formation. Glutathione has many important functions: making DNA; supporting immune function; breaking down some free radicals; helping certain enzymes function; regenerating vitamins C and E, Q10; transporting mercury out of the brain; helping the liver and gallbladder deal with fats and more.
